Christmas Visit December 2008
by B. Holm
My husband was born in Copenhagen, DK in the mid 1950's. He had not been "home" since he was 13 years old. Last December my mother (I am Canadian and we live in Ontario, Canada) presented me with a monetary gift. I decided that this would be year I would take my sweetheart home. We flew into London, England and spent 2 wonderful days there. This is where my family originated. We then took the chunnel train into France and drove to the Netherlands, into Germany and then took the ferry to Denmark. My husband has a wonderful older aunt that lives just outside of Copenhagen. She was thrilled to have her nephew visit with her. While we stayed in a hotel in Copenhagen (within walking distance of Tivoli and all the sites and shopping), we drove to the suburbs to enjoy a lovely evening with his Aunt. She has visited our family in Canada a few times and it was lovely to visit her home. She has recently taken ill and we are so very thankful we had this time with her (which will no doubt be our last visit with her). Over our 31 years together, my husband often talked to me and our children of Denmark. He has provided a very strong Danish heritage to us and while we celebrate a true Danish christmas (with ALL of the wonderful traditions including the meal that I have learnt to prepare from his mother), it was a dream come true to actually experience it in Denmark! This visit gave me a lot of insight into just how my husband became the wonderful person that he is. Of all the places in Europe that we visited on our tour (which included London,UK, Paris,FR, Brugge,Belgium, Amsterdam,Netherlands, Hamburg, Germany, and Ogdenburg,Germany) our time spent in Denmark is most memorable. I enjoyed Tivoli so much we went twice - this is a real Christmas experience. The shopping, the history, the sights - well it was most enjoyable. Most of all, family and friends from Denmark always said a visit should be in summer (and we hope to go back at that time of year soon), but no-one ever described how incredibly beautiful Denmark is in winter, especially during the Christmas season. Don't hesitate to visit at this time of year - you will have the time of your life!!!
